When it comes to job opportunities in the solar energy industry, the sky’s (literally) the limit.
At Green Alternatives, we pride ourselves on our trained and certified team – and we are always looking to add to our crew! As demand for solar installations continues to grow and more property owners see the cost savings and environmental benefits of investing in clean energy, trained technicians are always in demand.
Renewable energy technology is a rewarding field for young adults entering the workforce for the first time and career changers alike. Just ask our company President Chris Rohaly who switched to the renewable energy field after working in the auto industry for years.
Luckily, Indiana is a great place to start on your solar journey! With leading education programs and high job growth (both in the state and nationally,) newcomers are entering the field at a dynamic time!
Here are some things to know if you’re considering a career in the solar industry.
EDUCATION
Solar technology is a quickly growing and changing field. Receiving the right training will give you a competitive edge. All of Green Alternatives’ main crew leads are certified technicians, and it’s a difference-maker in ensuring we’re operating at the forefront of the field and that our installations are done to the highest technical standards. Below are two programs in Indiana that are churning out qualified solar professionals.
Ivy Tech Community College
Ivy Tech’s Energy Technology program is a hands-on, immersive learning experience, where students dive right into the field and learn how to design and install solar systems. The college offers technical certifications in Renewable Energy Technology and Industrial Wind Technology. Fun fact: Many of Green Alternatives crew members are Ivy Tech graduates, and Chris serves on the program’s Advisory Board!
Purdue University
As a nationally recognized leader in engineering, Purdue University offers a wide range of degree opportunities in energy engineering technology. The school’s Applied Energy Lab also provides hands-on experience in solar energy.
JOBS
From manufacturing to system design and installation and operations, job opportunities abound in the solar field. For more on career pathways and ways to transition to solar energy from your current career, check out the Solar Training Network.
